    Eff those fad diets…

A balanced diet contains items from many dietary categories to guarantee adequate consumption of all necessary elements, and it often includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, dairy or dairy substitutes, and healthy fats. The quantities and particular requirements may differ according to age, gender, activity level, and dietary demands.

A healthy diet is a long-term commitment and a lifestyle choice that involves making long-term adjustments to your eating habits rather than depending on temporary or restrictive diets.

Implementing a balanced and nutritious diet, in conjunction with regular physical activity, forms a solid basis for a healthy lifestyle, while practising moderation in eating foods and beverages high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats, or being mindful of portion sizes, also helps to avoid snacking excessively and maintain a healthy weight.

Avanti Deshpande, PCOS and Gut Health Nutritionist advises that instead of focusing just on losing weight by following a fad diet, seek to transform your relationship with food so that mindful eating becomes a habit.

What exactly are fad diets, and why are they so named?

“A fad diet, like any other upcoming trend, is based on diets that ensure faster results without following conventional nutritional advice,” Avanti Deshpande noted. Fad diets are becoming increasingly popular among many of us due to their rapid and promising outcomes in a short period of time, but the question of whether they work or not remains.”

“Yes, fad diets work, but only for a limited time,” she added. This eventually leads to an irregular and unhealthy eating regimen. Fad diets primarily restrict themselves to certain food types that are unrelated to the individual’s nutrient demands.

Unfortunately, this results in the failure of these fad diets, leaving individuals vulnerable to an unhealthy lifestyle. Furthermore, it is solely concerned with short-term outcomes rather than long-term advantages. Rather than pursuing trendy diet fads, mindful eating is what you need to do for the rest of your life if you want to reap long-term advantages from your everyday diet.”

    Tips for Mindful Eating:

Rather than focusing on weight loss as the primary goal, Avanti Deshpande proposed that you practise mindful eating in the following ways:

    1. Eat the most essential meals of the day using the healthy plate technique, which includes 12 plates of vegetables, 1/4 plate of protein, and 1/4 plate of carbohydrates.
    2. Include a wide range of plant-based foods in your diet to receive most of all nutrients such as fibre, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Incorporating plant-based beverages, such as Sofit Almond Drink and Sofit Soy Drink, which include Protein, Dietary Fibre, is vegan, naturally gluten-free, and have no added preservatives, can aid you in the long term if you are adopting a plant-based diet.
    3. Unless advised by a doctor, avoid removing any food category from your diet because you believe that fats or carbohydrates are harmful. To maintain a proper nutritional balance, try to incorporate each food category in your regular meals in moderation.
    4. To stay hydrated, drink 8-10 glasses of water every day.
    5. Try sticking to a steady exercise programme by participating in a certain type of physical activity such as any sport, yoga, walking, weight training, or aerobics.

“Since the vegan revolution took over the world by storm, people have been non-hesitant to switch entirely to a plant-based diet,” the health expert said. Plant-based diets have been linked to improved overall well-being and have become a healthier option for vegans as well as those looking to transition to plant-based and dairy-free options. So, instead of focusing simply on weight loss as a New Year’s resolution, let us strive for a better and more sustainable lifestyle by adopting conscious eating choices in our daily lives.”
